Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the effect of α tocopherol on spermatogenesis and Leydig cell of rats exposed by 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (dioxin). A total of 100 rats were divided into 5 groups so that each group consisted of 20 individuals that received dioxin treatment and the control group(C) was given 0 ng / kg/BW of dioxin and 0 mg / kg of α tocopherol / day, group T0 was given dioxin as much as 700 ng/kg/BW / day and α tocopherol as much as 0 mg / kg/BW / day, group T1 was given dioxin as much as 700 ng/ kg/BW / day and α tocopherol as much as 77 mg / kg/BW/ day, group T2 was given dioxin as much as 700 ng / kg/BW / day and α tocopherol as much as 140 mg/kg/BW / day and group T3 was given dioxin as much as 700 ng / kg/BW/ day and α tocopherol as much as 259 mg / kg/BW / day. Dioxin and α tocopherol were administered for 45 days. This study suggested that dioxin administration reduces spermatogenesis and Leydig cell-growth by evaluating the number of spermatogenic cells and Leydig cells. The administration of α tocopherol able to increase the number of spermatogenic cellsand Leydig cells. The results indicated that α tocopherol antagonized the reproductive endocrine toxicity and improve the pathological changes in spermatogenesis caused by dioxin.
